Café Soleil has one of the best happy hours in DC. We run it late from 4:30-8 pm to give you plenty of time to make it down for a couple drinks and an appetizers before you hit up the metro to head home. We’re the home of the “chalkboard wines,” offering a wide variety of whites and reds that are always $5 a glass or $20 a bottle. Usually, we feature restaurant only wines that cannot be sold retail. This way you can try new vintages that you cannot find anywhere else.

Café Soleil, The Bottom Line, The Madhatter, The Front Page DC, The Front Page Arlington and Cedar. Possibly the best group of restaurants and bars in Washington DC. Many of which have been and continue to be a part of tradition and the DC nightlife culture for decades. The Bottom Line was first opened over 30 years ago by my father, Dick Heidenberger. His dedication, hard work, and attitude has been the foundation for the continued success of all of these businesses. Some of the businesses have undergone massive overhauls, like the Madhatter. This DC mainstay since the early 80′s recently moved locations to a much larger and better location right off Connecticutt Avenue at Dupont Circle. The newest of the group, Cedar, has achieved notification in the Zagat Guide. The Front Page was the first restaurant I actually remember him opening. I was only about eleven, and I remember walking through the restaurant, it used to be a Japanese restaurant, and thinking how huge the place was. The Front Page across the river in Ballston Virginia embodies the same core concepts and theme of its Dupont Circle “brother“. The Front Page still has the top rated happy hour and the most insane brunch in the District. The Bottom Line remains mostly unchanged, and still mostly embodies the roots of the restaurant business. I still eat at the Bottom Line at least twice a week just to remind me that “this is where it all started!” It gives me a deep sense of humility and respect for the business I have grown into. It took over 30 years to create something that is nothing short of “awesome”, and I am now a functional part of it all. I recently had the pleasure of becoming part of the “family” at Cafe Soleil, and I never allow a day to pass without knowing I am part of a much larger group of well established businesses.

Dick’s business partners have taken his dream and pushed forward into a new era of everchanging surroundings. No matter how many changes or new faces come and go, the spirit of DC’s restaurant industry lies within the core concepts of all Dick’s businesses, partners, and customers. It all ends and starts with one passion and one dream, and that is what I like to call “The Bottom Line!” I look forard to seeing many familiar faces whether it be for lunch at Cafe Soleil, a cocktail at The Bottom Line, or some good old fashioned fun with my brother at The Madhatter.

Cheers,

Alex Heidenberger

The Men behind the scenes are Dick and Alex Heidenberger, father and son, owners of Café Soleil. (Shown Above)

Dick began his entrepreneurial restaurant ventures over 30 years ago with the opening of the Bottom Line. The restaurant industry has been the “Heidenberger” way ever since. Now there are 13 businesses with the entire Heidenberger family contributing to their success.

Before Dick was the driving force behind The DC Restaurant Group, he was one of the most notorious bartenders in DC in the 80’s and 90’s, working seven days a week at the Bottom Line and The Madhatter. Alex began his career scooping ice cream in Crystal City, VA at one of Dick’s ice cream parlors appropriately named Dickey’s. He went on manage the Bethany Beach, DE location for a summer before moving to Mango’s to bus tables and work the omlette station for Saturday and Sunday brunch. Alex explains, “It is all I ever known! I’ve never really had a choice, but I loved working with my father and brother. There is nothing better than working side by side with your best buddies, my Dad and Brother!” Alex continued working at Mango’s as a server, then as a bartender with his brother Eric (who you can see every weekend at The Madhatter), before he moved up to managing Mango’s. He continued working at Mango’s for the past 13 seasons before the opportunity with Café Soleil came to fruition. In December of 2009, Alex partnered with his father to become part of a new family here in the District. “Café Soleil has been a very fulfilling experience.” Alex says, “I love our staff here, the energy is so great, and the customers are wonderful. The best part of the restaurant business for me is the sense of family, not just with my Dad and Brother, but with all of the staff and customers. In any of my Dad’s restaurants, I always have a ‘buddy’.” The atmosphere at Café Soleil embodies the “Heidenberger way,” and the Heidenbergers promise to make you feel welcome and at home.
