Our testers determined the efficacy of each press by determining how much of the total garlic clove was used in the pressing or chopping process.
Overall, the models that “chopped” rather than “pressed” the garlic produced the least amount of garlic waste. The Garlic-A-Peel was the most effective, with little to no pulp remaining stuck on the pressing lid or the grate after pushing the garlic through. The handy removable chamber collects all of the garlic and is simple to empty into a bowl, pot, or pan, and scrape out the last pieces of garlic with a spoon to make full use of the entire clove.
The Chef’n GarlicZoom chops the entire clove as well, but some bits get stuck on the walls of its narrow chamber, making some minced pieces difficult to extract. Although the NexTrend Garlic Twist has a large chamber to scrape garlic from, some will inevitably become stuck in the cross-cutting teeth.
Traditional press models are not designed to use an entire garlic clove—some of the garlic will be pressed through the holes, but some will also flatten against the holes from the pressure, leaving extra garlic pulp behind. The waste left behind in the press was even more noticeable when pressing an unpeeled clove, and when deciding whether or not to peel their clove, one must weigh the pros and cons of convenience versus effectiveness.
Waste is also produced by rocker-style presses such as the Vantic and Joseph Joseph. Because of the downward pressure, some of the garlic flattens and becomes stuck on the grate, and some of the mince is difficult to extract from the holes without the use of a knife point or similar tool.
- Ease to Clean
While kitchen gadgets can help speed up the cooking process, if they’re difficult to clean, they can be more trouble than they’re worth. Naturally, cleaning a garlic press immediately after use is much easier. Waiting for the garlic to dry is a recipe for disaster, as the sticky minced pieces will cling to all surfaces.
Every model we tested was dishwasher safe, but the most precise and effective method of cleaning was a quick hand-wash right after use. With its large chamber and plastic teeth, the NexTrend Garlic Twist requires only a brief rinse under running water to remove any remaining garlic pieces. If any remains stuck in the teeth, the tines of a fork can easily dislodge them.
The Zulay’s pressing plate has sharp enough spikes to catch most of the garlic pulp, which can then be peeled off and discarded, followed by a quick rinse. The Zyliss is the only model that includes its own built-in cleaning tool, and while it’s a little difficult to use, it’s still a useful addition.
The chamber of the Garlic-A-Peel is easily removed and washed, but there are many parts that must be disassembled from this device to clean it completely — the grate, a plate behind the pressing part of the lid, and the chamber itself — making cleaning a little more involved. The Chef’n GarlicZoom is simple to clean, but you must remove the internal blades and set them aside, which is risky and could result in a lost piece.

When preparing large meals or recipes that call for a lot of garlic, having a press with a large capacity can be useful. We put each press through its paces to see how many cloves it could effectively press and how large its holding chambers were for storing larger quantities of chopped cloves.
While chopping-style presses such as the Chef’n GarlicZoom and the Garlic-A-Peel can only chop one or two small pieces of garlic at a time, their chambers can hold up to 5 or 6 minced cloves. After peeling several garlic cloves, you can easily chop them with these devices in succession, with no need for in-between cleaning, and have a large quantity of garlic ready for your recipe.
The large chamber of the NexTrend Garlic Twist piqued our testers’ interest, and they quickly filled it with seven cloves of garlic, only to discover that this was too much for the simple twist to handle. While the chamber is large, the teeth that cut the garlic are small, so twist one to two garlic cloves at a time. However, the NexTrend, like the Chef’n GarlicZoom and the Garlic-A-Peel, can be used to chop garlic cloves in succession, storing a large amount of mince in its chamber.
Traditional garlic presses could only press one large or two small garlic cloves at a time. If you try to overload these devices, they will become much more difficult to press, and you may get some garlic chunks sprayed back at you from the pressure. Although the Vantic rocker-style press has a larger surface area than the Joseph Joseph, you should still only press one or two cloves at a time for the best results.
While some people are unconcerned about the overall build quality of something as simple as a garlic press, others value longevity and high-quality materials in all of their kitchen appliances. We examined each model to see how well it was constructed and what materials it was made of.
The Rosle Stainless Steel Press is made of long-lasting stainless steel and features undeniably smooth hinges and pressing action, as well as heavy handles.
