Traditionally, tonic water (or Indian tonic water) was made by dissolving quinine in carbonated soft drinks. 8. Tab Drinks
The Coca-Cola Company created and produced Tab (stylized as TaB) is a diet cola soft drink between 1963 and 2020. During the 1960s and 1970s, Tab was Coca-Cola’s first diet drink. The drink was offered in a variety of flavors, including fruit-flavored, root-beer-flavored, and ginger-flavored. Late in the 1980s and early in the 1990s, caffeine-free and clear variations were released.
Saccharin, Tab’s main sweetener, was linked to bladder cancer in rats in research published in the early 1970s, which prompted the FDA to mandate the labeling of products containing the sweetener. In a later study, no evidence was found that saccharin causes cancer in humans, so the label requirement was repealed.

Through its IBM 1401 computer, Coke’s marketing analysis department generated a list of over 185,000 four-letter words with one vowel, adding suggestions from the company’s own staff; this list was then sifted for words deemed unpronounceable or too similar to existing trademarks. A final list of about twenty names was selected, and “Tabb” was then shortened to “Tab” during development due to the possible play on words. Robert Sidney Dickens created the new bottle design for the soft drink as well as the capitalization pattern (“TaB”) used in the logo.
The Coca-Cola company had introduced six different flavors of Tab during the 1970s (all of them sugar-free): Root Beer, Lemon-Lime, Ginger Ale, Black Cherry, Strawberry, and Orange.
